Belgium-Cold Springs firefighters (l-r) Justin M. Woodruff and Taylor M. Rector recently participated in a two week Firefighter Level 1 training program that was conducted at the New York State Fire Academy in Montour Falls.  

This program consisted of 116 hours of instruction in the following subject areas based on National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Firefighter I standards and the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) training curriculum:

  • Basic & Intermediate Firefighter Skills  
  • OSHA Firefighter Safety
  • Hazardous Materials First Responder Operations
  • Weapons of Mass Destruction Awareness
  • Incident Management System
  • Air Mask Confidence & Firefighter Survival Skills
  • Confined Space Awareness
  • First Aid, CPR and AED

Students are required to pass both a written and practical skills examination in order to successfully complete the course.

A graduation ceremony was held at the conclusion of the training program on July 14th where Justin and Taylor received National and New York State Firefighter Level I certifications. 

 

The Town of Lysander Fire Training Committee recently conducted a New York State Firefighter 1 Training Course that concluded with a graduation ceremony on Wednesday, March 30, 2005. Members from the Baldwinsville, Belgium-Cold Springs, Cody and Lakeside Fire Departments participated with Onondaga County Fire Instructors Paul Becker, Dave Donhauser, Bill Hopper, Kerry Ordway, Tom Perkins, Mike Pitts and Jay Woodruff presenting the program.

This course consisted of 78 hours of instruction in the following subject areas based on National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Firefighter 1 standards and the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) training curriculum:

  • Basic & Intermediate Firefighter Skills
  • OSHA Firefighter Safety
  • Hazardous Materials First Responder Operations
  • Weapons of Mass Destruction Awareness
  • Incident Management System
  • Air Mask Confidence & Firefighter Survival Skills

Students are required to pass both a written and practical skills examinations in order to successfully complete the course and receive New York State Firefighter certification.

Baldwinsville Firefighter Matthew Virkler received the class valedictorian award and Baldwinsville Firefighter Robert O'Kelly received the class salutatorian award both for academic excellence and achievement.

Henry "Hank" Boynton Award

On Thurs., October 7, 2004 the Council of Departments Educational Services (C.O.D.E.S) organization was awarded the Boynton Award. This award is in honor of Chief Henry "Hank" Boynton, who was a Firefighter with the Syracuse Fire Dept. from February 1964 until his death in 1994. This award was created to recognize the Community's need to lessen the suffering & loss from fires started by juveniles & encourage prevention efforts. Each year an award is given to an individual and/or organization who has proven their dedication to Chief Boynton's principles through outstanding leadership, initiative or donation of resources.
